- <p>This working paper explores the application of sustainable development principles in the Thames Gateway regeneration initiative, which took place in East London and the counties of Kent and Essex during the late 2000s. The Thames Gateway was a central element of the New Labour Government’s strategy to regenerate and stimulate economic growth in these areas between 1997 and 2010, building on earlier efforts by the Conservative administration in developing East London’s Docklands. The research draws on policy analysis, documentary review, and interviews with stakeholders involved in sustainability initiatives and decision-making. The study identified four distinctive but overlapping and complementary strategies for integrating environmental priorities into urban regeneration and economic growth strategies: socially cohesive growth, low-carbon growth, accommodated growth, and integrated growth. This typology offers an interpretive framework for analysing different approaches to sustainable urban development.</p>
