-
Urban retail is undergoing a profound reconfiguration in the opening decades of the twenty-first century. Chapter 1 frames the volume by situating the current “retail revolution” within a long lineage of commerce-city interdependence, then foregrounds the disruptive forces now undermining bricks-and-mortar formats. The editors trace how e-commerce, the Great Recession, and COVID-19 have accelerated mall closures, high-street decline, and commercial desertification, sparking debates over a looming “retail apocalypse”. Parallel processes of touristification and commercial gentrification are recasting central shopping streets into visitor-oriented, food-focused corridors, displacing resident-serving shops and eroding urban heritage. Against this backdrop, the chapter sets out the book’s objectives: to map the heterogeneous geographies of retail crisis and renewal; to interrogate emergent phenomena such as logistics hubs, pop-up stores and urban agriculture; and to advance planning strategies that reconcile sustainability, equity, and competitiveness. Anchored in a diverse theoretical corpus in commercial urbanism and a multimethod research design – literature review, geographic information system analysis, interviews, mystery shopping, and international case studies – the volume offers both diagnosis and prescription. It also introduces the volume’s global scope, spanning case studies from Europe, North America, and Latin America to illustrate divergent trajectories. Ultimately, it argues that retail remains a pivotal pillar of inclusive, prosperous urban futures.
