- (Uploaded by Plazi for the Bat Literature Project) The remai ns of six mu rid species have been recovered from late P leis1ocene/Holocene sed iments from Kilu rockshelter, Buka Island, no rthern Solomons. Th ree of th ese species (Solomys po11celeti, S. salebros11s and Melomys bougaim•ille, wh ich is here confirmed as bei ng dis1inct from M. nifescens) are s1 ill ex1an1 and are end emic 10 the islands of Buka, Bougainvi lle, and Choise ul (S. salebrosus only). A further two species (S. spriggsarum and M. spechti) are described here as new, a nd are apparent ly extinct. The fina l species, Rat/us ex11/a11s, i represented only in level 3 of the site, which is disturbed, and may date fro m a nywhere between 6680 ybp and the present. T he cx1inc1ion of S. spriggsarnm and M. spechti probabl y occurred be1ween about 6670 and 1860 ybp, and may have been caused by the iniroductio n of dogs pigs, 0 1her ra ts a nd cuscus to the Solomons.
