Fil. 2: 193, t. 123B. 1858.</b></p><p><b>Range:</b> — Mexico, Mesoamerica, Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia (CH, CO, LP, SC).</p><p><b>Ecology:</b> —Common; in montane forests, near river margins; (450–) 1600–3500 m.</p><p><b>Notes:</b> —Blades ternate, 3-or 4-pinnate-pinnatifid; proximal pinnae pedicellate, the pedicels (0.5–5.5 cm long), not winged; stipes with spines; venation free; awns present on costae adaxially. Distinguished by the whitish prickles on the blade axes. <i>Pteris coriacea</i> Desv., a related species, is known from Ecuador and Peru (Tryon & Stolze 1989); <i>Solomon 11375</i> (MO, not seen), from Bolivia, is cited as this species, but the identity needs verification.</p>
