-
We discovered and described ECT2 as a major solid tumor gene product in humans and mice. ECT2 is transcriptionally activated within minutes following transformation and is present in large quantities in the solid tumor. ECT2 expression is controlled by the cellular tumor suppressors p53 and Rb1. We describe here expression of ECT2 in the primary tumors of humans with breast cancer. ECT2 expression is, like in genetically engineered mouse models of cancer induced by tissue-specific p53 deletion, among the genes whose expression changes most significantly transcriptome-wide when comparing tumor and normal breast, and present in large quantities in humans with breast cancer in vivo. ECT2 is a sensitive and specific marker of transformation in the human breast and reagents that recognize ECT2 will be suitable for population-level detection of cancer in humans with breast cancer for prevention of disease.
