-
This paper deals with the teaching of writing skills at school in the Republic of Uzbekistan, reviewing a number of problems that appear because of systematic, structural, and cultural discrepancies between English and Uzbek. Specifically, it elaborates on important aspects such as grammatical and syntactical gaps, vocabulary issues, and phonetic peculiarities that are further complicated by different styles and strategies of writing. It also discusses implications for the students' writing development in terms of limited exposure to English, teacher preparation, and traditional approaches to education. The article then illustrates with practical pedagogical strategies how a teacher can work through the challenges: contrastive analysis, scaffolded instruction, use of culturally relevant materials, extensive reading, and constructive feedback. Understanding these barriers will ensure that teachers work more effectively in supporting Uzbek students to develop their skills in writing in English.
