- <p><em><span>Alcoholism is a chronic, progressive disease characterized by a pathological craving for alcoholic beverages, leading to both psychological and physical dependence. It is accompanied by the development of withdrawal syndrome when alcohol consumption is discontinued, as well as persistent somatoneurological disorders and progressive mental degradation. The long-term effects of alcoholism include severe damage to multiple organ systems, cognitive decline, emotional instability, and significant impairment in social and occupational functioning. Additionally, the disorder contributes to an increased risk of psychiatric comorbidities, including depression, anxiety disorders, and personality changes, further complicating the treatment process and overall prognosis.</span></em></p>
