The core pathophysiology of ROP involves hyperoxia-induced damage to developing retinal vasculature, followed by a phase of relative hypoxia that triggers abnormal neovascularization. The "Hypoxic Clamp" concept, previously proposed, envisions a nanoscale or microscale implantable device for precise, localized oxygen control within the ophthalmic artery. While promising, the Hypoxic Clamp relies on advancements in nanofabrication and biocompatible materials that are not yet fully realized.</p> <p>This paper introduces the "Hypoxic Vent," a macroscale, ex vivo blood oxygen regulation system as a practical, near-term alternative for preventing ROP. The Hypoxic Vent utilizes existing, readily available technology to achieve similar physiological goals, albeit through a different mechanism. It provides a bridging solution, offering immediate benefits while research on implantable micro-devices continues.</p> </div> </div> </div> </div>
