•
Map 6 Today

In this commentary, we first summarize the morphological characteristics of temporal words representing dates in Chinese dialects. Many of those lexical forms are bisyllabic and can be separated into a determiner and a head. Heads include ri 日, tian 天, zhao 朝, dan 旦, bu 晡, ming 暝, which originally meant “sun,” “sky,” “morning,” “night,” respectively. Relatively less dialect variation is seen in determiners, which are mostly represented using directional components hou 后 “back” and qian 前 “front.” This suggests the distinction of the two semantic categories: the kernel semantic category comprising “today,” “tomorrow” and “yesterday” and the lateral semantic category comprising those days following “tomorrow” and those preceding “yesterday.”

As for the lexical forms representing “today,” we classify them into eight different types focusing on the difference of heads, and describe the geographical distribution of each lexical types. There are innumerable forms taking a general counter that turned into a suffix, such as jinrige 今日个, jinrge 今儿个, and jinge 今个 as well as those taking a suffix of personal pronoun, such as jinmen 今们. We speculate the etymon of these forms and hypothesize the mechanism of changes.

The PTH form jintian 今天, which exhibits the Yangtze River type distribution, is the latest form that came into existence.
