•
This article examines Iran’s persistent and worsening air pollution crisis, driven by both conventional pollutants (i.e, emanating from burning fossil fuels) and destructive dust storms originating from dried wetlands, deserts, deserted farms and contaminated lands. The toxic dust contains hazardous particles, heavy metals, and microbes, severely impacting public health and causing economic losses, especially in southern provinces like Khuzestan. Despite recognizing the severity of the problem, Iran’s government has implemented only limited and inadequate measures, and regional environmental degradation continues unchecked due to mismanagement and political constraints. The crisis highlights the need for comprehensive, regional, and sustainable strategies, but current political and economic challenges hinder effective action, forcing communities to rely on resilience and adaptation.
