-
The impostor phenomenon refers to the difficulty of internalizing achievements on one's own merits, and is especially problematic in these contexts, as it is associated with depressive symptoms. Based on this problem, this study aimed to verify the predictive role of the impostor phenomenon in levels of depression in university students. To this end, we used a sample of 225 Brazilian undergraduates, predominantly female (61.3%), from public institutions (66.1%) studying Psychology (66.3%) and aged between 18 and 65. Data was collected using the Clance Scale of the Impostor Phenomenon (ECFI), the Patient Health Questionnaire - 9 (PHQ-9) and a sociodemographic questionnaire. Prevalence analyses, the T-test and simple linear regression were carried out. Thus, based on the aforementioned methodology, there was a predominance of depressive symptoms at moderate levels (25.5%) and severe levels of impostor phenomenon (37.6%), with a greater presence of impostorism in females. Furthermore, linear regression showed that the impostor phenomenon explains 36.8% of depressive symptoms. Therefore, it was concluded that, as well as being more present in females, impostor feelings can act as predictors of depressive symptoms in university students. Furthermore, based on the results found, there is a need for further studies on the subject, given the prevalence of imposter and depressive feelings among university students.
