•
Road accidents continue to occur, and reducing accidents remains a challenge. The investigation of
road accidents is important for developing effective strategies to reduce their occurrence. The purpose of
the study is to assess the overall safety of the roadway in Barangay Layac, Dinalupihan, Bataan. The
researchers used accident data reports for the years 2020–2023. In this research, a survey was conducted
among 371 respondents, including road users and traffic officers, to determine the most significant factors
causing road accidents. The researchers considered 33 factors, and they were divided into three groups:
human factors, vehicle factors, and environmental factors. Using the relative index importance, it was
found that environmental factors such as road traffic, malfunctioning traffic lights, a lack of traffic signs,
poor road markings, and a lack of road barriers are the top five significant factors that cause accidents.
Furthermore, a site observation was then conducted to assess the top five environmental factors. Lastly,
the researchers conducted interviews with traffic officers regarding the safety of the road. The researchers
proposed preventive measures to keep the road safe in Barangay Layac.
