E-governance initiatives in India took a broader dimension in 1990s for wider applications with emphasis on citizen-centric services. The major ICT initiatives of the Government included, inter alia, some major projects such as railway computerization, land record computerization, etc. which focused mainly on the development of information systems. Later on, many states started ambitious individual e-governance projects aimed at providing electronic services to citizens. Though these e-Governance projects were citizen-centric, they could make lesser than the desired impact. Government of India launched National e-Governance Plan in 2006. 31 Mission Mode Projects viz. agriculture, land records, health, education, passports, police, courts, municipalities, commercial taxes, treasuries etc. were initiated. Despite the successful implementation of many e-Governance projects across the country, e-Governance as a whole has not been able to make the desired impact and fulfil all its objectives. E-Governance will increase inclusive growth that covers electronic services, products, devices and job opportunities. Moreover, electronic manufacturing in the kcountry needs to be strengthened. Though these e-governance projects were citizen-centric, they could make less than the desired impact due to their limited features.

Government of India has approved the e-Kranti programme recently with the vision of "Transforming e-Governance for Transforming Governance", All new and on-going e-Governance projects as well as the existing projects, which are being revamped, should now follow the key principles of e-Kranti

namely Transformation and not Translation', 'Integrated Services and not Individual Services', 'Government Process Reengineering to be mandatory in every MMP', 'ICT Infrastructure on Demand', 'Cloud by Default', 'Mobile First', 'Fast Tracking Approvals', 'Mandating Standards and Protocols', 'Language Localization', 'National GIS (Geo-Spatial Information System)', 'Security and Electronic Data Preservation'. The portfolio of Mission Mode Projects has increased from 31 to 44. Many new social sector projects namely Women and Child Development, Social Benefits, Financial Inclusion, Urban Governance, e-Bhasha etc. have been added as new MMPs under e-Kranti.

Digital India is a campaign launched by the GOI to ensure that Government services are made available to citizens electronically by improved online infrastructure and by increasing Internet connectivity or by making the country digitally empowered in the field of technology. It was launched on 2 July 2015 with the objective to include plans to connect rural areas with high speed internet services and by improving digital literacy. The vision of Digital India programme is inclusive growth in areas of electronic services, products, manufacturing and job opportunities etc. and it is centered on three key areas Digital Infrastructure as a Utility to Every Citizen, Governance & Services on Demand and Digital Empowerment of Citizens. Digital Literacy mission will cover six crore rural households. It is planned to connect 550 farmer markets in the country through the use of technology. To connect rural India with the Digital India, the Government of India impelled email services provider giants including Gmail, office and rediff to provide email address in regional Languages. The email provider company has shown positive sign and is working in the same process.
