  • <p>This dataset presents a georeferenced map delineating the <strong>approximate perimeter of the Quilombo Remnant Community of Vila Esperança de Mariental</strong>, located in Lapa, Paraná, Southern Brazil. The mapping was conducted on <strong>October 8th, 2022</strong>, using a <strong>Remotely Piloted Aircraft (RPA or drone)</strong> equipped with <strong>PPK (Post-Processed Kinematic)</strong> correction to ensure geodetic precision.</p> <p>This community is recognized as a <strong>"comunidade remanescente de quilombo"</strong> under Brazilian law (ADCT/1988), but also shares similarities with other <strong>Afro-descendant traditional communities</strong> across Latin America and the Caribbean, including:</p> <ul> <li> <p><strong>Palenques</strong> (Colombia),</p> </li> <li> <p><strong>Cimarrones</strong> (Central America),</p> </li> <li> <p><strong>Maroon communities</strong> (Suriname, Jamaica, Guyana),</p> </li> <li> <p>and <strong>Afro-Mexican settlements</strong> (Costa Chica, Oaxaca and Guerrero).</p> </li> </ul> <p>The mapping product includes elevation contours, vegetation cover, and ground control points, and aims to support territorial recognition, cultural heritage preservation, land regularization policies, and participatory environmental planning.</p> <p>The publication is part of a broader initiative on <strong>environmental justice</strong>, <strong>geospatial methodologies</strong> and <strong>Afro-Latin American heritage mapping</strong>.</p>
