This scientific article aims to synthesize current knowledge on the biodiversity, ecosystems, and conservation status of the nine provinces that make up this region. Through a comprehensive review of technical literature, protected area management plans, and government reports, the region’s exceptional biological richness is characterized, driven by its complex topography and climatic variability. The main ecosystems are identified and analyzed, including coastal lomas, wetlands, inter-Andean valleys, high Andean relic forests, and puna ecosystems. The presence of numerous endemic and threatened species is documented, such as the amancaes flower (Ismene amancaes), the Andean condor (Vultur gryphus), and the Andean cat (Oreailurus jacobita). The analysis reveals that this biodiversity faces severe threats from mining, unplanned urban expansion, unsustainable agricultural practices, and the accelerated impacts of climate change, such as glacial retreat. The current conservation framework—focused on a network of Protected Natural Areas (PNAs)—is evaluated, and critical gaps in governance and integrated land management are identified. It is concluded that the conservation model based on isolated PNAs is insufficient to counteract landscape-scale threats. Strategic recommendations are proposed, focusing on watershed-based management, the strengthening of environmental oversight, investment in scientific monitoring, and the promotion of nature-based economies as a path toward sustainability and the effective conservation of the region’s natural heritage.
