  • <div> <p><strong><em><span lang="EN-IN">Abstract</span></em></strong></p> <p><em><span lang="EN-IN">Turmeric (<em><span>Curcuma longa</span></em> L.) is not only a revered spice and ancient medicinal plant in Indian culture but also a vital commodity in global trade due to its pharmacological, culinary, and cosmetic applications. India contributes nearly 80% of global turmeric production, with Maharashtra being one of the key growing states. The Marathwada region, which includes districts such as Nanded, Hingoli and Parbhani are known for traditional turmeric farming. With increasing awareness about environmental health, soil degradation due to chemical inputs and consumer demand for residue-free food, organic turmeric production has emerged as a viable and sustainable alternative.This study critically analyzes the potential and scope for organic turmeric farming in Marathwada. Through surveys of several farmers, field observations, focus group discussions and expert consultations, it was found that although demand for organic turmeric is rising in both domestic and export markets, its cultivation in the region faces several challenges. Key issues include high cost and complexity of organic certification, lack of consistent market linkage, limited knowledge of pest and disease management through organic means and low initial yield.Nonetheless, the region offers unique opportunities. Marathwada's agro-climatic conditions are well-suited for organic turmeric, and farmers already use traditional knowledge like neem-based pest control and compost application. With proper institutional support, training modules, value-added processing infrastructure, and government-backed Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs), organic turmeric farming can improve income and resilience for small and marginal farmers. This research proposes strategic interventions to overcome hurdles through policy reforms, awareness programs, targeted subsidies, and public-private partnerships. It further emphasizes the importance of strengthening supply chains, promoting branding, and accessing export markets. Expansion of organic farming in Marathwada is not only economically beneficial but also a step toward achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) related to food security, health, and climate action. The study aims to contribute to the academic and policy discourse on sustainable agriculture by providing region-specific insights and recommending multi-dimensional strategies for the growth of organic turmeric farming in Marathwada.</span></em></p> </div>
