-
This article presents a formalized and reproducible protocol for the verification of historical sources. In contrast to traditional source criticism, which often relies on institutional recognition, stylistic analogies, or expert consensus, the proposed protocol introduces a structured sequence of independent checks based on the principle of epistemic minimalism: the overall trustworthiness of a source is determined by its least verified component.

The protocol divides each historical object into three analytically distinct

layers - provenance, physical carrier, and semantic surface - and applies separate verification criteria to each. Provenance is treated as the primary and non-compensable condition: sources lacking a documented and verifiable history of appearance and transmission are excluded from further analysis. Physical and stylistic examinations may only be applied after provenance verification and are explicitly prevented from serving as substitutes for missing origin data.

Each verification level concludes with a categorical evaluation (verified, epistemically unstable, or unverified), which determines what further actions may or may not be taken. Based on the final integrated assessment, each object receives a verification status, accompanied by a mandatory Verification Certificate and, optionally, a structured Verification File containing all procedural records.

The protocol is designed to support auditability, resist narrative bias, and introduce reversible, data-driven standards for the inclusion of sources into academic and curatorial circulation. By enforcing a strict procedural logic, it aims to realign historical practice with the norms of accountable evidence and methodological transparency.
