-
Fostering sense of belonging and peace in school is fundamental in order to create a safe and
supportive learning environment, nurture respect, empathy and fairness among students,
and address issues on bullying, discrimination, violence, and inequity. Students who feel a
strong sense of belonging to their academic community are more likely to engage in
academic activities, seek help when needed, and persist in their educational goals
(Goodenow & Grady, 2018). The sense of belonging in universities is closely linked to
students' sense of peace and well-being on campus. As stated in the 2030 Agenda set by the
United Nations for Sustainable Development, institutions should be strengthened in
promoting peaceful, inclusive and just societies (SDG #16). The studies of Wilson and Lipsey
(2018); Jones, Kljakovic, and Taylor (2018); Palaganas and Dela Cruz (2018) found that
schools implementing restorative practices experienced reductions in suspension rates,
improvements in school climate and increased feelings of safety among students. However,
notable gaps on this area were identified such as perspectives and engagement of students
themselves in shaping peace initiatives. This study aimed to determine the sense of
belongingness among Marians in relation to their sex and cultural affiliations, explore their
lived experiences on peace in the university. The study employed quantitative-qualitative
approach, specifically descriptive design. A survey instrument was used to determine the
level of sense of belongingness of the Marians. To explore the lived experiences of the
respondents on peace, interview was conducted. Focus group discussion (FGD) was used to
delve deeply into the students’ lived experiences and surface insights and perspectives that
may not have been captured in the survey. The findings were used as basis in the Project
PEACE HUB: Promoting Empathy, Acceptance, and Civic Engagement by Harnessing Unity
and Building Belongingness among Marians.

Keywords: Involvement, Promoting Empathy, Social acceptance, Valued competence
