-
This research paper provides a comprehensive technical review of Meltdown and Spectre, two critical processor vulnerabilities that exploit speculative and out-of-order execution to leak sensitive data from privileged memory. The paper explains the underlying microarchitectural mechanisms, including cache timing and side-channel exploitation, and presents an analytical comparison between both vulnerabilities in terms of scope, design flaws, and mitigation completeness. It also discusses mitigation strategies such as Kernel Page Table Isolation (KPTI), Retpoline, and Speculative Load Hardening (SLH) with an evaluation of their performance trade-offs. This work aims to enhance understanding of microarchitectural security and emphasize the ongoing need for secure hardware design in modern computing system
