-
This study aimed to investigate whether different musical genres could affect the emotional
induction of musical modes and the correlation between musical sophistication and emotions.
Participants (N=20) completed demographic questions and questionnaires based on the
Goldsmith musical sophistication subscales before rating their perception of happiness and
sadness for 16 musical stimuli generated from four compositions played in major and minor
modes in both rock and classical genres. The results showed that classical and rock genres
had the same magnitude effect but in opposite directions, with the musical modes differing
significantly in both genres. The study also found a moderate positive significant relationship
between musical sophistication and happiness, but no significant association with sadness.
The study's findings suggest that the choice of musical genre and mode can influence
emotional response, and musical sophistication might be an important aspect of emotional
induction. Implications for future research and statistical analyses are presented in the
discussion section.
