•
The book “Legends from Old Singapore” is a collection of stories adapted from the classicial Malay Annals (also known as Sejarah Melayu), beginning with the founding of the Srivijayan kingdom of Singapura by Sri Tri Buana (also known in the legend as Sang Nila Utama) in AD 1299, and later, his reign was passed to the second raja, Sri Pikrama Wira (AD 1347-AD 1362), who was succeeded by the third raja, Sri Rana Wikerma (AD 1362-AD 1375), followed by the fourth raja, Sri Maharaja (AD 1375-AD 1388), and after the death of Sri Maharaja, Raja Parameswara (also known as Sultan Iskandar Shah; AD 1388-AD 1391) took over the rule of the island kingdom. His reign came to an end with the fall of the kingdom to the Majapahit Javanese invaders. The stories include familiar tales like Badang and The Redhill, and lesser-known tales such as Raja Shulan’s conquest and Raja Chulan’s expedition to China. These stories offer a magical experience that inspires imagination and are a valuable resource for students of the ancient history of Singapore long before the British colonialization in 1819.
