-
This article investigates the phenomenon of double modality in English, extending its analysis beyond the conventional domain of modal auxiliaries to include the roles of grammatical Mood and inversion structures. While traditional studies have focused on combinations of modal verbs—such as might could or may should—the interaction of Mood (e.g., subjunctive, conditional) and syntactic inversion (e.g., Should you need..., Had he known...) with modal expressions remains largely unexplored in linguistic literature. This study argues that these grammatical features function as additional layers of modality, contributing to what can be termed syntactic double modality, and in some cases even triple modality. Drawing on authentic examples from contemporary English, the article demonstrates how these structures encode and reinforce nuanced degrees of epistemic, deontic, and dynamic modality. The research fills an existing gap in the study of modality and proposes a broader, integrated framework for understanding how modality is realized through both lexis and syntax. These findings have important implications for theoretical linguistics, syntax-pragmatics interfaces, and the teaching of advanced grammar to non-native speakers.
