•
Abstract. This research investigates precedent units within Uzbek and English literary discourse, with the objective of examining their structural, semantic, and functional properties. Precedent units comprising proverbs, aphorisms, citations, and culturally entrenched expressions significantly shape the stylistic and pragmatic dimensions of literary texts. Through a comparative lens, the study explores the influence of cultural, historical, and linguistic factors on the formation, deployment, and interpretation of these units across the two languages. Emphasis is placed on the role of precedent units in intertextuality, authorial voice, and reader engagement, as well as their contribution to textual coherence, stylistic variation, and the implicit transmission of cultural meaning. Methodologically, the study integrates descriptive linguistics, discourse analysis, and contextual evaluation to provide a comprehensive understanding of precedent units as both linguistic and cultural constructs. Results indicate that, although many precedent units fulfill universal communicative and expressive functions, their linguistic realization, stylistic application, and cultural significance exhibit notable differences between Uzbek and English literary contexts. Additionally, the study underscores the pedagogical value of recognizing and analyzing precedent units in literature and language instruction, highlighting their potential to enhance interpretive competence, intercultural sensitivity, and the ability to discern stylistically marked forms.
