contents
This paper explores the role of natural gas as a transitional fuel in the global energy transition, using Qatar as a case study to examine how resource-rich economies can balance economic growth with environmental sustainability. The study analyzes Qatar’s strategic position as one of the world’s leading natural gas producers and evaluates how natural gas can support the shift from high-carbon hydrocarbons to cleaner energy systems while maintaining energy security.

Using a two-step methodological approach, the research combines a comprehensive literature review with a PESTLE analysis to assess political, economic, social, technological, legal, and environmental factors shaping Qatar’s energy transition. The paper highlights Qatar’s alignment with international climate commitments, including the Paris Agreement, its investments in renewable energy, carbon capture technologies, and emerging hydrogen pathways, as well as its integration of sustainability objectives within Qatar National Vision 2030.

The findings position natural gas as a pragmatic bridging solution that can reduce emissions in the near term while enabling longer-term decarbonization, offering valuable insights for policymakers and energy-exporting countries navigating the transition to a sustainable global energy future.
