•
This paper examines Noam Oxman's Sympawny no. 4 (Chubby Cat), a contemporary composition that synthesizes traditional orchestral notation with pictographic representation to create a dual-function artistic work. Through analytical examination of the score's visual architecture, harmonic language, and instrumentation, this study situates Oxman's work within the historical continuum of graphic notation from the mid-20th century experimental tradition to contemporary interdisciplinary practices. The analysis reveals how Oxman achieves functional coherence between visual representation and musical content while maintaining accessibility to performers trained in traditional Western notation. This research contributes to understanding how contemporary composers negotiate between visual artistry and musical functionality in graphic score design, demonstrating that representational imagery and rigorous compositional practice need not be mutually exclusive.
