- <p>Saint Francis was unequivocal: should a friar ever come across money, he must treat it as a filthy object, casually found on the ground. Whoever handles it betrays the Franciscan message. And yet, it soon became clear that money could not be entirely avoided—at least not if the faithful were to be guaranteed safe passage to the Holy Land. Even there, in Jerusalem, coexistence with Greek schismatics, Maronites, Muslims, and other Christian orders meant a constant drain of funds and resources.<br><br>For this reason, each of you in this game is called to take on the role of a Commissary of the Holy Land—a Franciscan friar—working in a Franciscan convent in seventeenth-century Europe. The commissariats were the regional outposts of the Franciscan Custody of Jerusalem, the institution that, then as now, watches over the Church of the Holy Sepulchre and assists pilgrims on their journey to the Holy Land.<br><br>Now as then, the commissariats rely on a delicate balance between locally collected alms and strong political and diplomatic relationships with those in power. In this game, you will compete with your fellow friars to keep the Custody running efficiently, striving to distinguish yourselves as the finest administrator of this pious international organization—ad maiorem gloriam Dei!</p>
