•
Abstract

This study presents a comprehensive geographical assessment of the Jharkhand Millet Mission launched in 2024-25, examining its implementation across diverse agro-ecological zones in a state characterized by 29% forest cover and 80% rain-fed agriculture (Government of Jharkhand, 2023). Using mixed-method analysis incorporating GIS mapping and stakeholder interviews, the research evaluates millet cultivation potential across six purposively selected districts: Khunti, Gumla, Simdega, Dumka, Latehar, and Palamu. The mission addresses critical challenges including 67.5% child anaemia prevalence (NFHS-5, 2021) and climate vulnerability through promoting drought-tolerant nutri-cereals requiring 70% less water than rice (ICRISAT, 2022). Results indicate significant potential for sustainable livelihood enhancement in tribal areas, supported by ₹50 crore initial funding and Direct Benefit Transfer mechanisms. However, implementation faces constraints including inadequate market infrastructure and limited institutional support. The mission aligns with national climate-smart agriculture objectives while revitalizing traditional cropping systems essential for food security and nutritional improvement in Jharkhand's tribal communities.
