•
Pinellia calcicola Z.X. Ma & Yi F. Li, sp. nov. (Figs. 1–5)

Pinellia calcicola is superficially similar to P. cordata N.E.Brown in Forbes & Hemsley (1903: 173), but differs in having broadly sagittate leaf blades without bulbil at the sinus, a sub-boat-shaped spathe limb, never becoming orbicular but flattened during anthesis; P. calcicola is also reminiscent of P. polyphylla Hu (1984: 713) but differs in having an epigeal, superimposed bulbil developed at the apex of the petiolar sheath, and medium-sized broadly sagittate leaf blades, 9–17 × 8–15 cm (vs. deltoid-ovate or broadly ovate, 6–33 × 4–22 cm) with abruptly mucronate posterior lobes.

Type: — CHINA. Guangxi Autonomous Region: Guilin City [ũṳffi], Yanshan District [DZƜ区], NE of Dongkai [东开], Guilin Karst World Natural Heritage, trail through the boundary marker (buffer zone) No. 235, elev. 177 m, 25.1188975N, 100.395667E, in dry and half-shaded limestone crevices at hill top, in will drained substrate, 16 April 2025, Y.E. Subterrean stem a subglobose tuber, to ca. 3 cm in diam., often surrounded by short ovoid tubercles at apex, covered by dark brownish marcescent fibers broken down from petioles. Cataphylls not seen. Leaves 2–4 together; petiole light green, terete, 28–35 cm long; petiolar sheath measures ca. 1/6 the length of the entire petiole, developing a dark brown, epigeal and superimposed tubercle at the apex when mature; leaf blade medium green, membranous, broad sagittate; anterior lobe deltoid-triangular, 6.0–9.5 × 4.3–7.6 cm, apex acuminate and shortly mucronate at apex; posterior lobes triangular, 3.5–8.0 × 1.8–3.4 cm, long somewhat constricted at base, acuminate and mucronate at the apex, sometimes rounded in neotenic leaves; bulbil absent from leaf sinus. Inflorescence solitary, above the leaf blade, 34–38 cm tall; peduncle longer than the petioles, to 34 cm long. Spathe green; spathe tube narrowly cylindrical, 2.6–2.8 cm long, 0.6–0.7 cm in diam., with a constriction near the base, part below constriction ca. 1/6 of the entire spathe length; spathe mouth truncated oblique; spathe limb erect, slightly recurving, boat-shaped and flattening during anthesis. Spadix monoecious; female zone 0.6–0.8 cm long, consisting of 26–32 pistils, fully adnate to spathe; female flowers densely arranged; pistil ovoid; sterile interstice naked, ca. 0.3 cm long, coincide with the transverse septum at the spathe constriction; male zone yellowish, cylindrical, 0.3–0.4 cm long; anthers sessile, connective slender, thecae ellipsoid, 2-celled, dehiscing by apical slit; appendix erect, 17–20 cm long, slender, sessile at base. Infructescence erect, lower spathe persistent, unilaterally attached; berries ovoid, singleseeded. Fl. Mar–Apr.

Distribution and ecology: — Pinellia calcicola is a rare herbaceous species currently known only from a few localities in the Lijiang River [NJū] region in the vicinity of the city of Guilin, where it shows an obvious association with karst landforms. Field observations indicate this species is a karst obligate, growing exclusively in semi-shaded, persistently moist limestone crevices on undisturbed hill summits dominated by sclerophyllous and broad-leaved shrubs at elevations of 150– 230 m.

Additional specimens examined (paratypes): — CHINA.
