•
Afghanistan has experienced prolonged conflict, economic instability, and deep-rooted gender inequality, leaving women disproportionately affected by poverty and social exclusion. Microfinance has been widely promoted as a development intervention aimed at enhancing women’s economic participation and empowerment. This study empirically examines the impact of microfinance on women’s empowerment in Afghanistan across four dimensions: economic empowerment, educational enhancement, decision-making autonomy and social status, and accessibility of microfinance services. Using a quantitative research design, primary data were collected from 100 female microfinance clients in Kabul and Bamyan provinces through structured questionnaires. Descriptive statistics, reliability analysis, one-way ANOVA, correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis were employed using SPSS. The findings indicate that microfinance has a statistically significant positive impact on women’s economic empowerment (mean = 3.59), educational enhancement (mean = 3.67), and decision-making and social status (mean = 3.99). Overall women’s empowerment recorded a high mean score of 3.94. However, access constraints remain, particularly the requirement for guarantors (mean = 2.90). Regression results confirm that economic empowerment, educational enhancement, and decision-making autonomy significantly predict overall women’s empowerment. The study provides empirical evidence from Afghanistan and offers policy implications for improving the design and accessibility of microfinance programs to enhance women’s empowerment.
