- <p>The invariant debt framework (Elliott 2025–2026) identifies the gap between kernel and</p> <p>wrapper as the primary structural cost of social cognition. This monograph locates the en-</p> <p>gine that maintains the gap. The claim is precise: preference derivation occurs in two com-</p> <p>putationally distinct regimes—pre-index (compiled) and run-time (interpreted)—and the</p> <p>regime determines the thermodynamic cost of maintaining the agent’s identity across</p> <p>social contexts. A run-time operator derives preferences dynamically by polling the lo-</p> <p>cal social constraint surface, paying continuous metabolic compute to determine what</p> <p>they want in each environment. A pre-index operator executes preferences from a struc-</p> <p>turally locked kernel, paying zero marginal cost per environment because the preference</p> <p>was resolved before the environment was encountered. The distinction is not psycholog-</p> <p>ical. It is computational, and the computational difference maps to a complexity class</p> <p>separation: run-time derivation scales with environmental dimensionality; pre-index ex-</p> <p>ecution is environment-invariant. This asymmetry is the thermodynamic engine of in-</p> <p>variant debt, the mechanism by which the sorting operates, and the reason that signal</p> <p>consistency—not intelligence, not credentials, not effort—predicts the quality of com-</p> <p>pound cognitive output.</p>
