This paper examines the historical evolution of technological progress, tracing its trajectory from mechanized production and steam power to digital automation and intelligent systems. It highlights how each technological wave has reshaped patterns of production, labor, trade, and capital formation. Focusing on India, the study analyzes the country’s adaptive journey—from a colonial agrarian economy to a modern, technology-driven emerging market. It evaluates the economic implications of this transition, particularly in terms of productivity growth, employment restructuring, industrial diversification, and global competitiveness. The paper also explores the opportunities and challenges posed by AI for India’s development path, including skill transformation, digital infrastructure, and inclusive growth. By linking historical technological change with contemporary economic dynamics, the research underscores how AI can become a catalyst for sustainable and equitable development if strategically integrated into India’s policy framework. Ultimately, the study aims to provide a comprehensive perspective on how the long arc of technological revolutions continues to shape India’s economic future in the twenty-first century.

The journey from the Industrial Revolution to the era of Artificial Intelligence marks a profound transformation in the global economic landscape.
