  • <p>This article presents an interview with Japanese anime director <span><span>Hirokazu Hanai</span></span> conducted by Andrés Domenech Alcaide during <span><span>FicZone 2023</span></span> in Granada (Spain). </p> <p>Hanai is a multifaceted animation professional whose career spans numerous roles within the Japanese animation industry, including inbetweening, key animation, storyboard production, animation supervision, episode direction, series direction, character design, and production management. During the interview, he reflects on his professional trajectory, his directorial philosophy, and the collaborative dynamics of anime production.</p> <p>The conversation addresses his work on internationally recognized franchises such as <span><span>Neon Genesis Evangelion</span></span>, <span><span>Naruto</span></span>, <span><span>Fullmetal Alchemist</span></span>, <span><span>Inuyasha</span></span>, and <span><span>Rurouni Kenshin</span></span>. Special attention is given to his role as series director of <span><span>Don’t Toy with Me, Miss Nagatoro</span></span> (<em>Ijiranaide, Nagatoro-san</em>), adapted from the manga published by <span><span>Kodansha</span></span>.</p> <p>Hanai discusses the challenges of adapting different source materials—manga, light novels, and especially video games—highlighting the narrative and experiential demands posed by interactive media. He also reflects on his involvement in adaptations connected to game franchises such as <span><span>Mega Man Battle Network</span></span> (Rockman.EXE) and <span><span>Phantasy Star Online 2</span></span>, emphasizing the necessity of engaging directly with the gameplay experience to fully understand narrative structure and world-building.</p> <p>The interview further explores contemporary debates within the anime industry, particularly the integration of digital 2D workflows and 3D animation techniques.
