•
The present contribution, a multidimensional analysis, includes various separate items: a wide-range analysis on the issue of overtourism, its root causes and effects, and solutions proposed for its mitigation and partial solution.
This essay contains an attached position paper by AITR (Italian Association of Responsible Tourism).

It is followed by the description of two pilots carried out by CoopCulture in the Roman church of Santa Maria dei Miracoli, and in the church of Santa Maria in Aracoeli.

In particular, the pilots carried out in the two churches have been developed with the intention of reducing the overflow of tourist presences in some sites of attraction, spreading more awareness and offering alternatives to mainstream routes in order to contrast overtourism.

In the first case (Santa Maria dei Miracoli) the project has been addressed to people who entered the church by error; in the second (Santa Maria in Aracoeli), to visitors with a general interest in religious tourism and, above all, to those who use the Church as a simple passageway between the Campidoglio square and the Monument of Victor Emmanuel II (Vittoriano).

In conclusion, CoopCulture has carried out a thorough survey of articles, published during spring and summer 2020, that deal with the issue of overtourism, underlining all the recurrent topics such as: places, drivers, negative impacts, attempts at the mitigation of the phenomenon and proposed solutions.
