  • <p><b><i>Ammopelmatus mtpinos</i> Weissman, sp. nov.</b></p><p>Mt Pinos Jerusalem Cricket</p><p>Figs 1155–1165, Tables 2, 10, 24, 38</p><p><i>Distribution.</i> (Fig. 1155). High elevations around Mt Pinos, in Kern and Ventura Counties, California, east to Frazier Park, Kern Co.</p><p><i>Recognition characters.</i> Member of Fast Drumming Group. Large, wide dark black abdominal bands, 2n ♂ =23. Geographically closest Fast Drumming Group member is <i>A. grapevine</i>, but latter with 2n ♂ =25. Can be separated from also geographically close <i>A. crypticus</i> by drum rate; and from <i>A. tehachapi</i> by drum rate and karyotype (2n ♂ = 25 in latter).</p><p><i>Holotype</i>. Male (in alcohol, Fig. 1156). <b>California, <i>Ventura Co</i><i>.,</i></b> Mt Pinos, 34.810556° -119.111389°, 2413m, 22-viii-2020 (S20-3) AJ Abela. R 20-1 & R20-2, F2619. Collected as adult. Deposited CAS, Entomology type #20221. Measurements in mm: Body length 38.46, hind femur length 12.46, hind femur width 4.36. Fore leg tibia with 2 or 3 ventral spurs; middle leg tibia with 8 calcars, 2 ventral spurs; hind leg tibia (Fig. 1157) with 5 inner and 3 outer spines, 2 ventral spurs.</p><p><i>Allotype.</i> Female (in alcohol, Fig. 1158). Same data as holotype except R21-1, F2641. Molt to adult 8-vii-2021. Deposited CAS, CASENT #9080965. Measurements in mm: Body length 50.72, hind femur length 12.88, hind femur width 5.01. Fore leg tibia with 2 ventral spurs; middle leg tibia with 8 calcars, 2 ventral spurs; hind leg tibia (Fig. 1159) with 5 inner and 3 outer spines, 2 ventral spurs. Mt Pinos, Nordic Ski area, 34.813233° -119.126983°, 2540m, 24-viii-2006 (S06-94) ♂ 1. <i>Ventura Co.,</i> Mt Pinos, same information as holotype except 27-vi-2021 (S21-9) A. Abela ♀ 2.</p><p><i>Drum.</i> Calling drum similar in both sexes except female’s series is longer. <b>Male:</b> Holotype R20-2 (Fig. 1161) 20 drums over 2.2s (9.1 drums/s) at 22.5°. Paratype male R96-30 (Fig. 1162) with 68 drums over 7.1s (9.6 drums/s) at 20.5°C. <b>Female:</b> Allotype R21-1 (Fig. 1163) 210 drums over 24.8s (8.1 drums/s) at 23°C. Paratype female Frazier Park (S96-72), R96-50 (Fig. 1164) 297 drums over 41.0s (7.2 drums/s) at 19.5°C.</p><p><i>Derivation of name.</i> Named after the type locality.</p><p><i>Habitat.</i> To oatmeal trail at night (type locality S20-3); Jeffrey and Ponderosa pine forest under logs in shallow draws (S96-72). Conifer-woodland elsewhere.</p><p><i>Life cycle and seasonal occurrence.</i> Apparent 2-year typical life cycle.</p><p><i>Variation.</i> From 6 individuals, 4 had 2 and 2 had 3 ventral <b>fore</b> leg tibial spurs; all 6 had 8 <b>middle</b> leg tibial calcars, with 2 ventral spurs; all 6 had 5 inner <b>rear</b> leg tibial spines, and all had 3 outer <b>rear</b> leg tibial spines, and all with 2 ventral spurs.</p><p><i>DNA</i>. Fig. 1047, p. 579. F0269 (S96-72, Frazier Park); F2619 & F2641 (both type locality S20-3, Mt Pinos) all recovered in Group 20 Fast Drumming, a poorly supported clade with other fast drumming species from various Southern California localities: <i>A. acton</i>, <i>A. bakersfield, A. chimineas,</i> and <i>A. grapevine</i> (2n ♂ = 25 in latter) in same subclade.</p><p><i>Karyotype.</i> 2n ♂ =23. T21-8 (Fig. 1165, type locality S21-9) examined with 6 metacentric or submetacentric autosomal pairs; 5 acrocentric or telocentric autosomal pairs; and 1 metacentric X chromosome.</p><p><i>Discussion.</i> The type locality of <i>A. mtpinos</i> is some 19 km from the <i>A. grapevine</i> paratype locality (S92-31) along I-5.</p>
