-
Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni's The Mistress of Spices (1997) stands as a seminal work in contemporary postcolonial literature, intricately weaving themes of diaspora, cultural displacement, identity formation, and female empowerment within the framework of magical realism. This article examines the protagonist Tilo's transformative journey as a mistress of spices in Oakland, California, exploring how her narrative challenges traditional patriarchal structures while negotiating the complexities of diasporic existence. Through a postcolonial feminist lens, this study analyzes how Divakaruni employs spices as powerful metaphors for healing, agency, and resistance against colonial and patriarchal oppression. The novel's engagement with hybrid identity formation, the tension between tradition and modernity, and the reclamation of indigenous knowledge systems positions it as a significant contribution to feminist and postcolonial discourse. This analysis demonstrates how Tilo's transgression of prescribed boundaries ultimately leads to self-actualization and authentic female empowerment, offering a nuanced critique of both Western cultural imperialism and Eastern patriarchal constraints.
