•
The internet’s dominant communication protocols — SMTP (1982), IMAP (1986), and POP3 (1984) — were designed for a world of known, trusted academic institutions. They were never built for a world of sovereign individuals, adversarial actors, autonomous AI agents, and economic transactions. Email today is a “trust desert”: over 85% of global email traffic is spam, phishing attacks cost global businesses over $4.5 billion annually, and users spend an estimated 2.5 hours per day managing email that should be handled by intelligent agents or eliminated entirely.

We introduce KNOWDES (pronounced “nodes,” emphasizing that each participant is a sovereign node in an interaction network)—a new communication protocol built for the sovereign web. KNOWDES is not email 2.0. It is a complete replacement for SMTP/IMAP at the protocol level, built on four atomic primitives:

INTENT — a structured declaration of what a sender wishes to achieve (collaborate, pay, schedule, verify), replacing the free-text subject line with a machine-readable, schema-validated unit of interaction.

STATE — a shared, versioned object (document, project, contract, conversation) that evolves through collaboration, replacing email threads and attachment copies with a single, CRDT-synchronized source of truth.

ACCESS — a cryptographically signed, revocable permission granting a participant capabilities over a STATE object or INTENT type, replacing “CC” and “BCC” with granular, verifiable, and instantly revocable access controls.

EVENT — an immutable, signed log entry recording every change, acceptance, rejection, or execution, replacing read receipts and delivery confirmations with a tamper-evident audit trail.

KNOWDES is structured as a five-layer Universal Interaction Protocol (UIP) suite, from transport (UIP-T) through application (UIP-A). Every participant node is anchored to a did:techmanity (TIP v9.0). State objects are implemented as Conflict-Free Replicated Data Types (CRDTs) for offline-capable, merge-safe synchronization. Economic INTENTs execute via MetaMesh ActionLinks, settled through the Global Intention Exchange (HIE). Spam is eliminated structurally—not filtered, not reduced, but made architecturally impossible—through a three-tier reputation-gated entry system: senders with sufficient TNA Intelligence Score (TIS) pass to the AI agent; lower-reputation senders enter a provisional queue; unknown senders are silently rejected at the transport layer with no delivery receipt. The computational and economic cost of building sufficient reputation to spam at scale exceeds any plausible return on investment.

This paper provides the complete protocol specification: full INTENT and ACCESS JSON schemas, a 12-vector threat model with specific mitigations, a five-step AI decision framework, a P2P transport architecture with DHT routing and relay economics, a CRDT implementation guide for four STATE object types, a bidirectional SMTP legacy bridge, and complete integration with every layer of the Techmanity Stack. KNOWDES is the communication primitive that transforms the stack’s sovereign nodes from isolated data containers into a living, interactive, economically active web.
