Direct examination of the type specimens of both nominal taxa revealed no consistent morphological differences, and the two specimens are here considered conspecific. An old handwritten label attached to the type of C. eschscholtzii (“ C. leachii = C. eschscholtzii ”) indicates that this synonymy had already been suspected by a previous researcher, although it was never formally published. Hope's original descriptions are brief and rely primarily on general coloration. This is a character known to be variable within the genus Campsosternus and does not provide diagnostic features that separate the two nominal taxa. Both names were published in 1843. C. leachii has priority based on page number and is therefore the valid name. C. eschscholtzii is classified as a synonym.

No additional material referable to this morphotype from India Orientalis, circa Singapore, was available. Despite extensive material examined from the Philippines, no specimens corresponding to this morphology were found. This raises doubts regarding the accuracy of the published type locality of C. eschscholtzii. In the absence of additional evidence, the type locality is retained as originally stated. Because no specimens referable to this species were found among the Philippine material, C. leachii is not treated as part of the Philippine fauna.
