This importance comes in the context of increasing global energy consumption, the need to preserve the environment and reduce carbon emissions. Given the environmental challenges facing the world today, the use of smart materials in thermal insulation has become more important than ever. The research reviews the concept of smart thermal insulation, specifically smart phase change materials (PCM) and their importance in improving energy performance in buildings.

The study generally consists of three parts. The first part includes a review of the most important literature related to energy consumption in buildings and their efficiency policies globally, Arab and locally. The second part studies thermal insulation, especially smart thermal insulation using smart phase change materials (PCM), with an analysis of related research in 2022-2023. In the third part, the integrated programs (Autodesk Insight 360) and (Autodesk Revit 2017) are used to study the walls of the case study (a residential building in Damascus - Dummar project), calculate the thermal loads in the current situation, and when using smart thermal insulation, and compare the results to determine the amount of energy savings used for heating and cooling, in addition to carbon dioxide emissions.

This research sheds light on the importance of using smart thermal insulation in walls, especially smart phase change materials (PCM). The research concluded the importance of using smart insulation in walls to improve the energy performance of buildings and achieve greater sustainability. This study also plays an important role in providing valuable information to architects, to help them use smart phase change materials (PCM) and apply them in current and future projects, thus improving the energy performance of buildings.

This version is archived in the Arab International University (AIU) repository for open access and dissemination purposes.
