- (Uploaded by Plazi for the Bat Literature Project) Wesearched 19 caves, includingknownmaternityroostsand hibernacula,in Adair and Delaware counties,Oklahoma, forthe federallyendangeredOzark big-earedbat (Corynorhinutsownsendiiingens)on eightoccasions in 1989 and 1990. The same caves, and usuallythe same roostsiteswithincaves, wereused duringsummersas maternityroostsand duringwintersas hibernacula. An additionalcave was used by large numbersof big-eared bats (>120 individuals)duringspringand autumn of both years;thiscave mayserve as a transientroostand swarmingsite. At least one Ozark big-earedbat was found in 17 of 19 cavesduringone of the eightsurveys;none wasfoundin twocavesduringanysurvey.Numbers of bats using hibernaculavariedmarkedlyamong November,December and February surveysa,nd we inferthatOzark big-earedbatswereactiveduringwinter.Because big-eared bats move among hibernacula, accurate estimatesof winterpopulationsbased on a single surveymaynot be possible.
