•
Chronic wounds —diabetic foot ulcers, venous leg ulcers, and pressure injuries— represent a major healthcare challenge with significant impact on individuals’ quality of life and on healthcare costs. This article provides a comparative analysis of the best practice guidelines developed by the Registered Nurses’ Association of Ontario (RNAO) and the main equivalent international guidelines: the International Working Group on the Diabetic Foot, the European Wound Management Association, the National Pressure Injury Advisory Panel, the European Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel, and the Pan Pacific Pressure Injury Alliance (IWGDF, EWMA, NPIAP/EPUAP/PPPIA). Together, these organizations produce the International Guideline for Prevention and Treatment of Pressure Injuries, which is considered the global reference standard.
The best practice guidelines are characterized by a practical, accessible, and nursingcentered approach, with emphasis on prevention, patient education, and continuity of care, which facilitates their implementation across diverse clinical settings. In contrast, the international guidelines offer a higher level of technical detail, including advanced protocols, device classification, and global standardization.
The analysis highlights the complementarity between both approaches. Their integration strengthens evidencebased practice and reinforces nursing leadership. In this context, outcome evaluation and nursing research emerge as key elements for improving the quality of care.
