Various 3D printing techniques— including fused deposition modeling (FDM), stereolithography<span> </span>(SLA), selective laser sintering (SLS), inkjet printing, binder jetting, and semi-solid extrusion— allow controlled deposition of materials to fabricate patient-specific medicines with tailored dose, release kinetics, and geometry. These techniques support innovations<span> </span>such<span> </span>as<span> </span>polypills,<span> </span>rapid-dissolving<span> </span>tablets,<span> </span>modified-release<span> </span>systems, and<span> </span>implants.<span> </span>The<span> </span>first<span> </span>FDA-approved<span> </span>3D-printed<span> </span>drug,<span> </span>Spritam®,<span> </span>demonstrated the clinical relevance of this technology. Advantages include on-demand manufacturing, high customization, and improved therapeutic outcomes. However, challenges such as limited pharmaceutical-grade printable materials, regulatory uncertainties, scale-up issues, and quality-control requirements continue to restrict widespread adoption.
