•
Abstract Within the framework of the Standard Model and quantum field theory, Yang-Mills gauge theory successfully describes electromagnetic, weak and strong interactions. However, the Yang-Mills mass gap problem has not obtained a rigorous mathematical proof or physical interpretation up to now. Based on the virtual universe hypothesis and the coherent unified field theory, this paper understands space-time, mass, energy and interactions as manifestations of underlying coherent structures. It proposes that mass is essentially local coherent density, and the Yang-Mills mass gap arises from the self-coherent confinement effect of the coherent field. Furthermore, consciousness is introduced as an external coherent source, whose observation can trigger the instantaneous collapse of coherent states within a timescale smaller than the Planck time, thus stabilizing mass nodes. This paper points out that the physical origin of the mass gap can be logically and completely explained, but its exact numerical solution may never be rigorously constructed by humans, since it involves global instantaneous coherent collapse beyond the limits of human mathematics and computing capabilities.
