  • <p class="MsoNormal"><strong><span>Abstract</span></strong><span> </span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><em><span>T</span></em><em><span>his study focuses on artisanal, local, bush and illegal refineries in Ekpeye land. Ekpeye<span>  </span>by political zonation, consist of Ahoada West and Ahoada East Local Government Areas of Rivers State. Artisanal local refinery onomatopoeically known as kpofire in Niger Delta, the oil and gas hub region of Nigeria is considered to be illegal and economic sabotage by federal government. This bunker activity as organized environmental crime has significantly led to oil spillage loss of aquatic lives, environmental degradation, loss of lives and properties and economic and manpower shortages. The study aims at exploring the underlying causes of illegal refining, its consequences on local communities and the nation at large, its link to the rise in cultism and the measures taken by the government and stakeholders to combat the menace. Through qualitative research methodology and Robert Merton’s strain theory the research found Out that artisanal crude oil refining is strongly linked to widespread environmental degradation, unemployment, and economic marginalization.<span>  </span>Ultimately, it submits that the operation of illegal refinery sustains cultism in Ekpeye. The research recommended among others; community engagement, better regulatory framework, the provision of sustainable livelihood programs as alternative source of income to arouse the deplorable condition of Ekpeye among the comity of nations, and the training and retraining of ex-refiners. </span></em></p>
