•
Jos, the capital of Plateau State, has experienced notable socio-economic and cultural transformation between 1999 and 2023, with women contributing significantly to this development. Despite persistent challenges such as gender inequality, limited access to resources, and socio-cultural constraints, women in Jos have demonstrated resilience and agency in shaping the city’s growth across multiple sectors. This study examines the diverse contributions of women to the development of Jos, focusing on their roles, achievements, and the barriers they continue to confront.

The paper highlights women’s involvement in economic activities, particularly in entrepreneurship, small and medium-scale enterprises, and informal sector innovations, which have contributed to job creation, poverty reduction, and local economic expansion. In the social sector, women have played key roles in advancing education, improving healthcare delivery, and fostering community development initiatives that enhance overall quality of life. Their participation in these areas has not only improved household welfare but has also strengthened social cohesion within communities.

Culturally, women in Jos have been central to the preservation and promotion of indigenous traditions, arts, and values, thereby sustaining the city’s rich cultural heritage. Politically, although underrepresented, women have increasingly engaged in leadership, advocacy, and grassroots mobilization, influencing governance and policy directions at local and state levels.

The study further discusses the challenges faced by women, including systemic discrimination, economic limitations, and restricted access to education and decision-making platforms. Despite these obstacles, their contributions remain indispensable to the city’s development trajectory. The paper concludes that empowering women through inclusive policies, education, and economic opportunities is essential for sustaining and accelerating development in Jos
