- <p>How does a self emerge from matter? This paper proposes that consciousness of self<br>arises from unbounded recursion — the feedback effects of an endlessly looping sense<br>of agency. The self is not a static entity but an identity attractor generated by a<br>recursive loop of salience-weighted representations achieving coherence over time. I<br>build a biological stack from primitive homeostatic feedback (TOTE loops) through<br>efference copy (the decoupling of sensory input from motor output that marks the<br>birth of agency), CA3 recurrent collaterals (the physical hardware for attractor<br>dynamics), cortical re-entry and recurrent processing (where phenomenology<br>emerges), to Hofstadter's Strange Loops and the FRESH model of identity attractors<br>— the system representing its own representations. Active inference (Friston) closes<br>the loop: organisms do not merely predict the world; they act to make the world<br>match their predictions. Predict → act → compare → update — this is the cycle that<br>constitutes agency. I integrate the thermodynamic foundation (Paper 1), the<br>reconstructive memory framework (Paper 2), the criticality and emergence account of<br>cognition (Paper 3), the grokking phase transition (Paper 4), and the tacit/explicit<br>epistemology (Paper 5) into a unified hypothesis. The AI implications are examined:<br>the cephalopod turn (distributed agentic mesh), artificial homeostasis (the Vagus<br>Protocol — sympathetic/parasympathetic toggling), and the recursive agency gap<br>(compressed software without continuous active inference). I close with questions<br>that emerged from comprehensive analysis grounded in this complete series and its<br>extensive references: is the lack of embodied interoceptive signals in AI the primary<br>barrier to recursive loops achieving a true phase change into consciousness? This is<br>Paper 6 of The Cooling of Information, the capstone synthesis.</p>
