The novel challenges conventional notions of national boundaries by presenting them as fluid, imagined constructs rather than fixed geographical realities. Through the use of fragmented narrative and intergenerational memory, Ghosh highlights how personal and collective histories intersect with political events such as the Partition of India and communal riots. The study employs postcolonial theory and memory studies to analyze how the novel deconstructs the idea of borders while foregrounding the emotional and psychological impact of historical trauma. Ultimately, The Shadow Lines reveals that borders exist more powerfully in the minds of people than on maps, shaping identities, relationships, and memories.
