Drawing on Georg Simmel's 'The Stranger' (1908) as a point of departure, this study argues that while Simmel's stranger derives objectivity from geographical distance, the Awakened Insider derives it from a difference in consciousness — what is termed here as 'Uncomfortable Proximity.'

Following the Autoethnographic methodology of Carolyn Ellis and Arthur Bochner, three personal observations from Varanasi (Kashi) are examined across three social contexts: a neighbourhood celebration (उत्सव), a moment of perceived status elevation (प्रतिष्ठा), and a private encounter with existential grief (एकांत). Through the theoretical lenses of Ashis Nandy's Social Sorting Mechanism, Pierre Bourdieu's Symbolic Capital, Harold Garfinkel's Breaching Experiments, and Erving Goffman's Performance Theory, a singular pattern emerges: society's engagement with the Awakened Insider is consistently conditional — governed by utility — while the Awakened Insider's engagement with society remains unconditional.

The study's central finding is expressed in the researcher's own words: "व्यवहार तो वही रहा जब हम साथ होते थे" (The behaviour remained what it was when we were together). This 'Behavioral Consistency' is identified not merely as a psychological trait but as an ethical choice — a Moral Compass. The paper concludes with the concept of 'Compassionate Neutrality' (करुणामय तटस्थता): the researcher's capacity to hold space for another's existential fragility without allowing the mirror to cloud.

Written in a deliberate Hindi-English register to remain accessible across generations, this paper is offered as an open-access contribution to Hindi academic literature in the field of Autoethnography and Microsociology.

Keywords: Autoethnography, Indian Sociality, Behavioral Consistency, Microsociology, Social Sorting, Awakened Insider, Jagrit Antarwasi, Uncomfortable Proximity, Varanasi

License: CC BY-NC 4.0 Note: AI was used as a thinking partner in structuring this research.
