- <p>A recent report indicates large declines in house sparrow (Passer domesticus L.) populations in many Asian towns and cities. This speculated many different reasons including environmental causes. However, no scientific studies and insights have been reported so far. We studied reproductive successes, breeding, and nesting behavior in artificial nesting sites. During three years study in Nashik city area using standard artificial nest box design, observations were noted, reproductive output was observed. Variations in reproduction, breeding, and nesting were observed. Factors associated with reduced reproductive output, Breeding and nesting included temperatures variation, extremes of rainfall, high levels of vegetable material in the diet (all affecting chick survival and body mass), low insects densities (an important component of chick diet) and high concentrations of air pollution from traffic (affecting chick body mass). Reproductive failure linked to inadequate insect availability provides a major reason for declines in urban-suburban house sparrow populations. Increased traffic volume and vegetation removal are another important causal factors in these declines. However impact of radiations, waves in urban area are to be evaluated schematically for long term exposure. Increasing densities of key invertebrate prey away from major traffic areas should be an objective of conservation management aimed at urban and suburban house sparrows. These studies demonstrate the utility of standard artificial nest box for study of reproductive success in small cavity nesting birds.</p>
