•
English

This book inquires into the conditions of cognition from within recognition itself. Without borrowing established concepts or starting from any school's premises, it begins with what cognition does every day—recognition—and follows where it leads.

Method: at each position reached, the book attempts to deny, question, and bypass it. If denying is doing recognition, recognition is doing fixation, fixation involves the very thing being denied—and thus the denial uses what it denies—the position is established as inescapable, given a name, and used to take the next step. Each step is established through the ground principle: what destroys its own conditions of standing cannot maintain itself.

Four chapters yield the general structure of cognition: fixation (the basic operation of recognition), ground (the principle inescapable at the level of conditions of standing), dimensions (places that bear distinctions), unconfirmability (the relation between product and thing-itself cannot be confirmed), commitment (the product is treated as having preserved the thing-itself), intimate awareness (the "not-doing" that cognition cannot deny), pointing (does not say "what something is" but allows the walked path to be returned to), identity (distinctions remain constant at the same positions), and calibration (distinctions among products reach constancy). Chapter Four establishes how dimensions are constituted through ground, distinguishes two sources of certainty (ground's undeniability and calibration's constancy), and shows that the determinacy of linguistic meaning is a question of dimension-constitution.

The epilogue applies the framework in four directions: others (unconfirmability works here as everywhere), science's "is" (from preservation to equation adds a step that itself remains within unconfirmability), psychology's language (distinctions are inconstant, contradictions become unclear), and intimate awareness (structural position established through ground; the thing-itself of not-doing remains unconfirmable).

The book's starting point precedes those of Kant, Husserl, and Hegel. It presupposes neither subject and object, nor intentionality, nor being. It begins with difference. Difference requires none of these. The root validity of logic is derived from ground rather than taken as self-evident. Unconfirmability is not the thing-in-itself—it is reached from the structure of fixation. Commitment is not the natural attitude—it cannot be suspended. The limit of calibration: greater stability is not greater proximity.

Contains preface, four chapters, and epilogue, reader's guide.
