- The bas-relief is a type of sculpture that has less depth to the face and figures than they actually have when measured proportionately. This technique keeps natural shapes of the figures and allows the work to be seen from many angles without twisiting the figures themselves. The bas-relief's at Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris show scenes from the end of the Virgin Mary's life, when she ascended to heaven, was glorified by the angels and crowned the Queen of Heaven. Notre-Dame is one of the most famous cathedrals in the world, is considered one of the finest examples of French Gothic architecture and is especially regarded for its rib vault, flying buttress and enormous colourful rose windows.
